Supporting Tactical Warfighters with Imagery and Analysis

Consider this scenario: an NGA Support Team member deployed with the infantry needs to know if anything lies over the suspicious looking ridge in their path.  He retrieves imagery and notices an object that he cannot fully identify with the tools available to him.  He uses Multi-INT Fused Imagery ( MIFI) to circle the object in question and requests aid.  The product is routed to an NGA imagery analyst who uses tools on her end to identify the object as an abandoned camp.  She returns the annotated product to the tactical user who can present it to decision-makers.

MIFI Defined

That’s how it works.  The scenario above is an example of the value of this CTC-developed Multi-INT Fused Imagery known as MIFI.  MIFI is a Web-based application that allows users to develop geospatial products, reports, and briefings using near real-time imagery as a foundation.  These products are semantically searchable, reusable, and form the basis of collaboration.  Analysts and warfighters use MIFI to request, share, integrate, disseminate, and collaboratively develop all-source intelligence products.  MIFI extends support to forward-deployed warfighters to allow them to make short-fuse analysis requests and to inject HUMan INTelligence (HUMINT) Ground Truth into the shared information space.  MIFI enables analysts to:

• Create Interactive Image products with annotations that link to semantic metadata and provenance, allowing users to identify and contact the subject-matter expert that created the product.
• Receive GEOINT products and services based on a user’s COI and preferences
• Develop and disseminate MIFI products in an advanced collaborative environment
• Create, manage, share, and utilize their personal analysis data and workspace.

Opening the Analyst’s Shoebox

Beyond formal reports and products, much intelligence created by an analyst remains in a “shoebox.”  Intelligence gathered but not included in reports is left isolated in the analyst’s personal workspace.  MIFI allows analysts to create and selectively share products in a personal workspace with other analysts and analyst groups, forming the basis for analyst-to-analyst conversation via chat or e-mail, collaborative product development, ad-hoc requests for analysis assistance, and identification of subject-matter experts.
