Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)

The presence of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) on military bases and military training lands, as well as former and active combat zones, has significant impact on military readiness.  The inability to effectively, safely, and cost-effectively identify, characterize, and remediate UXO in both peacetime and combat situations also has a potential adverse impact on health and safety of military and nonmilitary personnel along with the quality of the environment.

Millions of acres of property in the U.S. and abroad contain UXO.  Some of these UXO sites are a result of U.S. military training activities and weapon system testing, while other sites contain UXO as a result of combat operations.  The UXO 2001 Report to Congress estimates over 11 million acres of property in the U.S. may be contaminated with UXO.  According to the report, there are more than 760 sites that must be cleared of UXO for Department of Defense (DoD) reuse or civilian use.

CTC Offers Clients Experience in UXO-Related Projects

The National Defense Center for Environmental Excellence (NDCEE), which is operated by CTC, is providing UXO technical expertise to the DoD.  Specific NDCEE contributions include the areas of UXO neutralization and remediation technologies, development of a recovery database, quality control procedures for UXO technology operators, land use controls as a UXO response, electronic fuze susceptibility, and UXO migration.

Drawing upon its experience performing nearly 35 UXO-related projects, CTC offers clients a clear linkage between the most recent advances in DoD UXO research and clients’ mission-specific testing, training, and program requirements.  With an explicit understanding of DoD’s broad UXO mission, our team has the ability to have significant, positive input in the areas of:

  • Investigations and Area Assessments
  • Land Use Controls at Munitions and Response Areas
  • Detection, Characterization, and Neutralization Technologies
  • Countermine and Humanitarian Demining Technologies
  • Safety and Awareness Training and Training Materials Development
  • Munitions Constituents Investigations
  • Environmental and Geophysical Surveying Support
  • Third-party Quality Control
  • Permitting Support
  • Response Cost Analysis Services.
