Johnstown, PA, January 17, 2008—Daniel R. DeVos, President & CEO of Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC), today announced that CTC is part of a team awarded a contract to apply laser-welded metallic sandwich panel technology to the DDG 1000 class of guided-missile destroyer ships. Laser-welded metallic sandwich panels are stiff, lightweight structures that offer the Navy corrosion resistance, reduced weight, and less distortion.
CTC is the principal subcontractor to Applied Thermal Sciences, Inc. (ATS) of Sanford, Maine, which won a multimillion-dollar contract from General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (BIW), to develop, test, and manufacture ship sets of Deck Edge Safety Berms and Personnel Safety Barrier Panels for DDG 1000 using laser welding technology it developed and patented under the direction of the Office of Naval Research (ONR). CTC will provide design, testing, evaluation, and documentation under a three-year multimillion-dollar subcontract.
“The ATS/CTC team won an open, competitive bid initiated by a private company (BIW) and fulfilled a significant need for the customer,” said DeVos.
BIW’s solicitation requested technical solutions for the Deck Edge Safety Berms and Personnel Safety Barrier Panels that are made from lightweight, corrosion-resistant materials that also meet structural, heat, and other requirements. Based on its extensive technical expertise, the ATS/CTC team was able to propose laser-welded metallic sandwich panel technology which offered a unique technology for this application.
DDG 1000 is the first in a class of U.S. Navy's multimission surface combatants tailored for the littoral, air, and subsurface warfare. Under a joint lead ship program, the first two ships of the class are being built by Bath Iron Works at its Bath, ME yard and by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in Pascagoula, MS.
CTC is an independent, nonprofit, applied scientific research and development professional services organization providing innovative management and technology-based solutions to government and industry.
