Watch promotional video highlighting new machine in Johnstown
Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) needed a friction stir welding (FSW) machine to expand the applications of this valuable joining process within the U.S. industrial base. Specifically, we required a FSW machine capable of handling very large parts, with an adjustable tool height that can be modified in real time, and a system to capture machine data live.
To meet these needs, we partnered with Quickmill, a builder of high-quality, turnkey machining centers. Quickmill collaborated with FANUC America to develop a custom control system tailored to CTC’s needs. With FANUC’s controls, the machine can perform both traditional CNC machining and FSW on thick aluminum. This dual capability allows us to make on-the-fly adjustments, eliminating the need for multiple runs. Additionally, real-time data from the machine enables us to incorporate machine learning and AI into our processes.
This brief promotional video provides an overview of our requirements and demonstrates how the machine, now operating in CTC’s high bay in Johnstown, meets these demands effectively.
